Newborn Lifestyle Session – Information Guide

Thank you so much for choosing me to capture the first days of your sweet baby’s life. It is truly an honour.

Eva Carter - Newborn Lifestyle Session

A newborn lifestyle session takes place in the comfort of your home, I love this style as it provides an intimate and personal feel to your photos. They are very relaxed, allowing time for feeding, settling and anything else that may come up with baby.

These sessions can be taken anytime within the first 4 weeks and as early as a few days old, it’s entirely up to you and how you’re feeling. If you haven’t had a Fresh 48 session and you wish to capture those early moments, the baby’s tiny features, then a session within the first 10 days would be best suited for you. However, newborns can be tiring, especially if you have other children, so not everyone feels like having their photos taken so early after giving birth, and that’s ok too! We can work together to make a plan that is best suited for you.

Newborn sessions can last anywhere from an hour to two hours, depending on the needs of the baby. If baby is getting hungry, we can pause for a bottle or nursing session. If you would like, I can continue shooting during this time as some of the most tender moments are capture are during time of feeding! Don’t worry, if you don’t want those images shared publicly, just say the word, but at least you will have them in your gallery to look back on. I recommend feeding your baby just before I arrive but please do not stress if nothing goes to plan, I know babies have their own schedule!

My goal is to capture the raw beauty, true emotion and the family interaction of the sweet new baby with mom & dad (siblings too). The smallest details are the ones we want to remember, the tiny toes, the way they hold onto your finger, those adorable lips and even how small they are wrapped in your arms.

The focus is all about those new moments, the baby’s tiny details, the cuddles and it is even ok if tears of joy are shed. My newborn sessions, are not about posing the baby or including props, however if you have something in mind please let me know. I will do a few photos of the baby alone swaddled or snuggled in a blanket (on a chair, sofa, in the crib, etc.), but nothing too crazy.

During the shoot, I use natural light only. Don’t worry if your home is small and doesn’t have lots of natural light, I always make it work and will find the best spots in your home to do the shoot. In most cases, the master bedroom bed is one of the best (and easiest) places to do the majority of the shots, all I ask is that bedside tables are tidied up and bedding is washed and clean. If possible light and plain bedding works best if you have it. Another location I like to highlight is the nursery. If you are like me you took a lot of time and planning where your sweet baby is going to spend most of their time and your planning should be shown off. The living room is also often a good spot, please just ensure that if there’s a table in view behind the sofa, thats it’s clear and tidy!

I suggest a simple short sleeved/short legged onesie so we see a little bit of that amazing baby skin. A white onsie offers a classic look. We can also do a few nudey ones but I never take the diaper off a baby and suggest a diaper cover to cover the diaper. It’s good to have a few clothes on stand-by just in case of any accidents, also a pretty wrap and/or muslin is a nice to have. While props isn’t my style, if there’s a special blanket or toy you wish to be included in a few photos, please have it out ready and let me know at the beginning of the shoot.

Your outfits should be comfortable and reflect who you are. I do not recommend matching, but rather coordinating. Make sure you are comfortable! Since newborn sessions take place in your home, they have a much more relaxed and casual feel. You can’t go wrong with jeans and a comfortable shirt. A dress works too but ensure it is a long and comfortable dress as I will have you on the bed.

Newborn sessions don’t only focus on the new baby, but the entire family and everyone’s connection with the newest addition to the family. Sometimes children are not usually fond of being told to pose or smile. It is best if we just give the children time to relax and try to capture their natural self. Don’t worry if your child is running about and active or busy playing and exploring as this is real life and he or she should be remembered. To get the family shots, I usually direct the adults to simply be with the child, or hold the child and we go from there.

To get the most out of your session, make sure that your little one has rested and has had adequate snacks and water. We can take breaks for snacks and play, however I will probably still shoot during the breaks. Dry, non messy snacks are best so their little faces stay clean during the session. Prepare the child for the session by letting them know that a friend will be taking some photos of them, it’s best not to surprise them.
