10 Tips to help you prepare for your Newborn Session

First off, congratulations!  As a newborn photographer and mom of two, I want to ensure that you get the most out of your in-home newborn session, as this time in your life is so fleeting.  I have put together my top 10 tips to help you prepare for your at home newborn session with Photography with Care.

  1. RELAX – These sessions are very relaxed as you just had a baby and are probably a little sore still!  It also allows time for feeding, settling, changing and anything else that may come up with baby.
  2. Feed Your Baby – I recommend feeding your baby just before I arrive but please do not stress if your sweet babe doesn’t want a top up, I know babies have their own schedule and that is why we allow ample time for these sessions.
  3. Props  My newborn sessions, are not about posing the baby or including props, however if you have something in mind please let me know. Or if you have a family heirloom that you would like included or a sweet knitted outfit that Aunt Greta made have it out prior to my arrival so we do not forget.
  4. Clear & Tidy – Notice I didn’t say clean and tidy, that’s right you just had a baby please do not use your energy giving your home a deep clean.  Just make sure the the master bedroom, nursery and living room area’s tables are tidied (great job for hubby).  Fresh linens, if possible light and plain bedding works best if you have it.
  5. Birth Announcement – Have your sign ready whether if it is a sign board, a card or one of the cute wooden announcement boards from Primrose+Pine have it filled out prior to our session so you can focus on snuggling your sweet baby.
  6. Pets – Your fur babies are more than welcome in the photos!  Though I recommend saving those epic shots till toward the end of our session so they have a chance to be use to me in the house and they aren’t distracting you from this special moment in time.  Always have treats on hand to reward them for their epic smiles. 😉
  7. Baby’s Outfit – During our session we will have enough time to have a few outfit changes for baby.  The Over Company Nodo sets look super adorable when your baby is laying in the crib or a Snuggle Me Organic Lounger and save you a lot of time perfecting the perfect swaddle for this session.  Bellies & Babies has a great selection of Nodo sets & Snuggle Me Organic Loungers to choose from.  I would also suggest a plain onesie so we can capture all of the little details of those little feet and chubby little legs.  If your bedding is plain feel free to pick your favourite onesie.
  8. Parent’s Outfits – Make sure you are comfortable! Since newborn sessions take place in your home, they have a much more relaxed and casual feel. You can’t go wrong with jeans and a comfortable shirt. I love blues and neutral tones.  Avoid shirts with logos as we don’t want to take the attention away from your baby in the photo.
  9. Siblings – If you have other children be sure to have bribery snacks and their favourite toy out for them to play with.  I will capture them interacting with their new sibling, the whole family and also grab a few of them solo doing their favourite activity.  They need to be celebrated too as they just got promoted to big brother or sister.
  10. RELAX – I said it again because it is so important.  I will help by cracking my best bad jokes, dancing like a fool and singing twinkle twinkle little star to help sooth baby. This is a very special time for you and hopefully having these tips will ensure you get the very best out of your session.  You’ve got this momma!
