DIY Fresh 48 Photos

Delivering a new bundle of joy during COVID-19? If so, read on for some handy tips on how to do your own Fresh 48 hospital photos.

Becoming a new mom brings out every emotion in the dictionary to begin with and I can’t imagine what you might be feeling on top of that about bringing new life into this world during this once in a lifetime pandemic.  Just know it is going to be ok.  I am here to help you capture those first 48 hours of your brand new babes life, since I can’t be there to do it for you.  Trust me, I wish I could, my heart lives for Fresh 48 photos.

Step 1: Wake your partner up. (haha) You will want a little help depending on how your delivery was and you will want to make sure you get in these photos as well.

Step 2: Get your partner to declutter around the hospital bed. Toss garbage, move your belongings to a corner of the room opposite to the head of the bed.

Step 3:  Turn off the hospital room lights and use natural light.  (Trust me on this one, those florescent lights are not flattering at all.) Also, skip the flash when using a cell phone or put the camera on auto with flash off.

Step 4: Move the basinet close to the window and angle the sweet babe so that the natural light is coming across the head at 45 degree angle.  This creates flattering angles so that all of the cute features are highlighted.  If you are in a shared room with another new mom ask if you can open the curtain for a few minutes to get some photos.  Hey, if you are feeling up to if even offer to take a few for her.

Step 5: Open the window blinds to ensure you have ample light.  If the sun is beaming in find another spot where the light isn’t harsh.

Step 6: If you brought a swaddle or cute nodo (knot) gowns change your baby now. You want to do some with the baby dressed and then you can do some cute bare ones near the end to ensure your sweet babe doesn’t get cold.  If your baby is using a soother take it away for the photos, you will miss that sweet face.

Bellies and Babies in Peterborough, Ontario has a variety of adorable swaddles and cute hats and gowns if this is something you don’t already have.  During this COVID-19 pandemic they are offering curb side pick up Monday-Saturday and delivery within Peterborough.  Thinking you want a sign board or “hello my name is” tags, they have those too.

Step 7: Don’t Stress!! Don’t worry about posing or waiting for the perfect moment, they are all going to be perfect because it is your little human.  Though I usually recommend feeding or topping your baby up because a sleeping baby is easier to work with.  If your baby is crying don’t stress, you will want to remember those moments too. More times than not a cry often photographs like smile. ;). Remember you are not a professional and perfect isn’t the goal here, capturing your small human is.

Step 8: Here is a list of some shots/angles you will want to get.

  • Over the bassinet looking down getting all of the bassinet and baby. (shooting down) You might want to volunteer your partner for this one.
  • Over the bassinet shooting down getting the baby waist up.
  • Get every single detain you want to remember: hand, ears, nose, tiny toes, hospital bracelet, hair, their nails (they come out so long) and those sweet little lips. When capturing the baby’s feet try to focus on the feet and make sure you avoid photos up the baby’s nose.
  • Get your partner to take a photo of you nursing or snuggling the baby and then in turn get photos of them nose to nose with the baby or simply looking at the baby as well as at the camera.
  • I love over the shoulder photos looking down at baby.

Please ask if you have any questions and as soon as physical distancing has been lifted I will be one of the first to come over and capture your newborn photos. Remember you are a super hero, you are strong and you are capable of anything.

I can’t wait to hear the news, xo
